How To Find The Best Headphones For Running
If you’re like most runners, music is a vital component of your routine. How else are you going to drag yourself out of the house early in the morning, if not for those tunes to shake the cobwebs from your brain and get your blood pumping? When you are looking for the best headphones for running, you want to make sure you take more things into account than just how good your music will sound though.
When choosing headphones for running, here are a few things you should take into account before you settle on a pair.
First, where do you do your running? If you run outdoors most of the time, then you have to consider your environment far more than someone who sticks to indoor tracks or the treadmill. When you are outdoors, you need headphones that will also allow you to hear ambient noise. When you are in the zone with your running, you rely on you ears to alert you to potential dangers…such as cars turning, buses chugging up behind you, and even other people. Unless you run in an isolated area that is completely free of traffic, trains and other hazards, make sure you can hear at least most ambient noise.
In this case, look for headphones for running that also have smaller earpieces, ones that rest on your ears rather than completely cover them. Noise cancelling headphones can be used in this case, when the earpiece is smaller, but you will still want to test them and see if they block the traffic sounds completely. You can always flick the noise cancellation off, however, if you are in a high traffic area or somewhere that you need to be aware and alert to your surroundings.
Headphones For Running indoors
If you run indoors, you can use noise cancelling headphones for running and have no problems. These will let you turn the rest of the world off, and focus on your workout with no distractions. You can also go for in-ear models that, even when they do not cancel out ambient sound, still block a large amount of background noise and distraction.
Whether you are indoors or out, headphones for running need to be durable. You will be sweating on them, after all, so make sure that the type you choose has some sort of sweat resistant features and properties. Also, if you are going for over the ear headphones, be sure they do not make you even sweatier! Some earpieces fit very snugly over the ear, and on hot days or during periods of exertion can build up a lot of extra heat.
Finally, make sure your headphones for running are lightweight, so they don’t jiggle around on your head. They should be snug, without being too tight, and stay put when you move around. Behind the head headphones are a good choice, as they do typically stay where you put them without slipping. You also want to consider cord length. A retractable cord will allow you to minimize cord flop by only letting out as much as you need. A better option may be cordless headphones for running, so you can eliminate possible snags altogether.
