Sennheiser Noise Cancelling Headphones

Sennheiser noise cancelling headphones are known as very good quality headphones, with both high user ratings and expert reviews. Sennheiser PXC-300 are a very good quality headphone especially for travelling, with mid-range pricing that makes them affordable for most users.

The Sennheiser PXC-300 resembles a slightly more high class of Walkman headphone (remember those?). They are, however, much better designed and made than the ones you wore in the 80′s! The earpieces are about 1.75 inches in diameter, and do not cover your ears completely…unless, of course, you have very small ears. They do, however, have very nice leatherette cushions that block out a considerable amount of noise by themselves.

You definitely notice them on your ears, as they are snug fitting. They are quite comfortable though, and don’t make your ears sweat. Sennheiser headphones all use their proprietary Duofol diaphragms and bass-tube technology, so the sound quality is extremely good.

Sennheiser noise cancelling headphones use what they call their Noisegard Advance system. This apparently gets rid of the background noise that all electronic devices give off. If you are in a very quiet area, you can actually still hear a slight hissing. If you are anywhere else where there is background noise though, the hissing cannot be heard at all. Additionally, these headphones eliminate any disturbance from radio frequencies, such as cell phones.

So how well do they block out noise? They do not do quite as well as the headphones that cover your ears completely, but they are very close. On a noisy bus or subway, they filter out most of the din in the background. With the noise cancelling on, the volume level of the music gets a big boost and the mid-range frequencies are also louder, which cancels out background noise significantly. The music does not get distorted in any way, and stays clear with good bass. Depending on how loud you are listening, you may feel some pressure on your eardrums when the noise cancelling is in effect. This is true of all noise cancelling headphones though.

These headphones are particularly great for people who travel frequently, especially by airplane. Not only do they dull the roar of the jet engine, but they are lightweight to pack and use. They come with a soft travel case, and they fold flat so they can easily be slipped into a carry on or even a purse. You can use them with the rechargeable batteries, which last for about 80 hours, or you can use the airline audio adaptor when you are in flight. Batteries however are required to use the noise cancelling feature, which is activated by a switch.

These Sennheiser noise cancelling headphones retail online for around $150 or so, less in some places. they do have other models that go for more, and for less. The PXC-450, for example, sells for just over $250, but also has larger earpieces and slightly more noise cancelling power. If you are looking for quality noise cancelling headphones that work as advertised, Sennheiser is a great choice.
